Learning Left and Right

Hi to all of you!

I’m right back here to help your child succeed! It does not matter what his abilities are right now, with some help he can be a success very soon! I’m here today to tell you about activities that can be helpful when teaching children about right and left. You will also find some worksheets that you can download and do with your child.

Learning Left and Right

Learning Left and Right - Twister Game

Twister is a game that children love! The challenge is to move your hands and feet to specific places on the big mat according to what the spinner says, and be careful not to fall over! Kids will love playing this game and at the same time they will benefit immensely in their self awareness and learning right and left.

You can get this game at Amazon.com.

Simon Says

This is another activity to play with your child. Give your child instructions one after another and your child should try to follow along.

“Put your right hand on your cheek, put your left hand on your left eye, put your right hand on your left shoulder, your right hand on your left ear, your left hand on your nose…”

This is great for teaching right and left side of the body and by touching body parts it will also boost your child’s self awareness.

Even if your child has difficulty learning right and left, when you have fun and play with him over and over again he will practice and learn it while enjoying himself.

Learning Left and Right - Command while Jumping

As an add-on to this activity, you can give him these instructions while he is jumping on a trampoline!

Command While Jumping

This one goes like this: have your child jump either on the floor or on a trampoline and while he is jumping give him instructions to raise his right/left hand/leg. Your child should raise that limb for a second and then put it down. Continue giving instructions in this matter. It would look somewhat like this: “raise your right hand, your left leg, your right leg, your left hand, your right leg…”

You can take this a step up and say two or more instructions in succession. “Raise your left leg and raise your right arm” Your child should do one at a time – first instruction first and second instruction second. This way of doing it is also very good for audio processing.

bdpq Worksheet

Children with poor self awareness will have difficulties learning left and right. That’s why they will usually have problems knowing the difference of these alphabets. The letters b and d look the same the difference is that b has a straight line on the left side and d has the straight line on the right side. The same is with p and q.

The worksheet below has a mix of these letters. You start reading the letters on the sheet. When you say “b” he should raise his left hand, when you say “d” your child should raise his right hand. When you say “p” he should raise his left foot a bit and when say “q” he should raise his right foot.

In this worksheet your child will have to figure out which direction is missing by each arrows. Each arrow points either up, down, right, or left, it has a hand pointing in another direction, and it has the word right, left, up, or down in the arrow. Your child should check which three directions he sees and say which one is missing.

Learning Left and Right - L shape

The L Trick

If your child knows how to write the letter “L” you can use this trick to help your child remember which side is right and which is left. Put your hands on that table palms down. Notice that the Left hand forms the letter L going down the index finger and across the thumb. When your child needs to know which side is left or right he can glance down at his hands and see which one forms the L.

Another Left, Right Trick

Learning Left and Right - Shoe TrickAnother idea is to write inside your child’s shoe. Write R or Right in the right shoe and L or Left in the left shoe. This will help him remember which side is right and which side is left.

  1. Hello, Hershy. Thank you for sharing this simple yet informative and fun blog for younger kids to learn about left and right.

I remember when I taught my son which is left and right… “So you write with your right hand and the other hand is your left.”

One day he came back from school and told me that I was wrong because his friend is writing with his left hand and not with the right hand! LOL.

Anyhow, thanks again for sharing this article. I learned some new activities on how to teach kids the left and the right.
